Amritsar – The Golden City of Punjab
Often called the Golden City and Guru ki Nagri, Amritsar is the spiritual heart of Sikhism and a living tapestry of history, faith, bazaars and food—just 28 km from the Indo-Pak border.
“Amritsar” means “Pool of Nectar,” named after the Amrit Sarovar around Sri Harmandir Sahib. Earlier called Ramdaspur (founded by Guru Ram Das). Linked to Valmiki Ashram (Ram Tirath) in the Ramayana tradition.
Foundations: Guru Arjan completed the Sarovar & Harmandir Sahib. Sikh Empire: Misls era → Ranjit Singh unified Punjab, fortified the city & gilded the sanctum. British/Modern: Railways/Town Hall; 1919 Jallianwala tragedy; 1947 Partition upheaval; 1984 Operation Blue Star—events that shaped the city.
Majha region (~31.63°N, 74.87°E), 234 m ASL. Summers can touch 45 °C; winters get foggy and near 0 °C; monsoon Jul–Sep (~726 mm).
Punjabi speaking, vibrant festivals (Gurpurabs, Baisakhi, Lohri). A global pilgrimage center welcoming millions annually.
Textiles, handlooms, phulkari, papad–wadiyan, traditional juttis, and a strong tourism/pilgrimage economy. Bazaars: Hall Bazaar, Katra Jaimal Singh, lanes around Heritage Street.
